What is Therapeutic Massage?

Lancaster California massage therapist treating female patientAs previously discussed, therapeutic massage is an alternative form of medicine that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manipulates muscles, tissue and skin to reduce stress and relieve pain and tension in their patients.  Swedish, or Classic Massage, is the type of massage that most of us relate to when discussing therapeutic massage, and the majority of Lancaster CA massage therapy schools teach it as their principal type of massage.  However, there are many other types of massage that schools have the option to include as part of their syllabus.  Following are just a few examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Practitioners that work in therapeutic massage should be referred to as massage therapists. From time to time you might hear them called a masseur or a masseuse, which refers to a male or female massage professional. Unfortunately, these terms often have a derogatory connotation among the general public and Lancaster CA professionals alike and are better avoided.

Massage Therapist Education Requirements

Programs can vary in length from several months for a Diploma or a Certificate to as long as 2 years for an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also be State specific based on the number of hours required for licensing.  An additional factor that may also have an effect on the program length is whether classes are offered during the daytime or in the evening.  In addition, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy may have general education requirements and the credits may be transferrable into a related Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have received your Degree, Diploma or Certificate, the training doesn’t stop there. The type and amount of continuing education you will need to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states have requirements for both number of hours and subjects covered, such as ethics or HIPAA compliance.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Every State regulates massage therapy differently, so it is not safe to assume that you will automatically qualify for licensing. Confirm with your new State prior to moving that you have satisfied the requirements to practice legally there.
