What is a Massage Therapist?

Oakland California massage therapist treating female patientAs previously discussed, massage therapy is an alternative form of healthcare that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manually stimulates muscles, tissue and skin to diminish stress and eliminate pain and tension in their patients.  Swedish, or Classic Massage, is the kind of massage that many of us think of when researching massage therapy, and the majority of Oakland CA massage therapy schools teach it as their principal type of massage.  But keep in mind, there are numerous other forms of massage that programs have the option to include within their syllabus.  Below are some of the more popular examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Practitioners that work in therapeutic massage should be referred to as massage therapists. On occasion one may hear them called a masseur or a masseuse, which refers to a female or a male massage professional. However, these titles generally carry a derogatory connotation among the general public and Oakland CA professionals alike and are better avoided.

Massage Therapy Education Requirements

Programs can range in length from several months for a Diploma or a Certificate to as long as two years to earn an Associate’s Degree.  The lengths of the programs will also be State specific based on the training hours required for licensing.  Another factor that may also influence the program length is whether classes are offered during the daytime or at night.  Also, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy often has general education requirements and the credits may be transferrable into a related Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have earned your Certificate or Degree, the training doesn’t stop there. The type and amount of continuing education you will need to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states have requirements for both number of hours and subjects covered, such as HIPPA compliance or ethics.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Each State has different regulations for massage therapists, so it is not safe to assume that you will automatically qualify for licensing. Confirm with your new State prior to moving that you meet the requirements to practice legally there.
