What is a Massage Therapist?

Middletown Connecticut massage therapist massaging woman patientAs previously discussed, massage therapy is a holistic form of healthcare that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manually stimulates muscles, tissue and skin to diminish stress and alleviate tension and pain in their clients.  Classic, or Swedish Massage, is the kind of massage that many of us relate to when discussing massage therapy, and almost all Middletown CT massage therapy schools offer it as their principal type of massage.  However, there are many other forms of massage that schools may or may not include within their course of instruction.  Below are just a few examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Professionals that work in therapeutic massage should be referred to as massage therapists. On occasion you might hear them called a masseur or a masseuse, which refers to a female or a male massage professional. Unfortunately, these terms typically carry a negative connotation among Middletown CT professionals and the public at large and should be avoided.

Massage Therapist Training Requirements

Programs can vary in length from a few months for a Certificate or a Diploma to as long as two years for an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also vary by State based on the number of hours required for licensing.  Another factor that can also have an effect on the length of the program is whether classes are scheduled during the day or at night.  In addition, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy may have general studies requirements and the credits may be transferrable into a related Bachelor’s Degree Program.  After you have received your Degree, Diploma or Certificate, the training doesn’t stop there. The amount and type of continuing education you are required to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states have requirements for both number of hours and subjects covered, such as ethics or HIPAA compliance.

Massage Therapist Licensing

Every State regulates massage therapy differently, so it is not safe to assume that you will automatically qualify for licensing. Confirm with your new State prior to moving that you have satisfied the requirements to practice legally there.
