What is a Massage Therapist?

Boca Raton Florida massage therapist treating woman patientAs previously discussed, therapeutic massage is a holistic form of medicine that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manually stimulates muscles, tissue and skin to diminish stress and relieve tension and pain in their clients.  Classic, or Swedish Massage, is the type of massage that most people relate to when discussing therapeutic massage, and the majority of Boca Raton FL massage therapy schools offer it as their principal type of massage.  But keep in mind, there are many other forms of massage that programs may or may not include as part of their course of instruction.  Following are just a few examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Practitioners that work in therapeutic massage are properly referred to as massage therapists. From time to time one may hear them called a masseuse or a masseur, which refers to a male or female massage professional. However, these titles generally have a derogatory connotation among the general public and Boca Raton FL professionals alike and are better avoided.

Massage Therapist Training Requirements

Programs can vary in length from several months for a Certificate or a Diploma to as long as two years for an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also be State specific based on the number of hours required for licensing.  An additional factor that can also influence the length of the program is whether classes are scheduled during the day or in the evening.  In addition, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy often has general studies requirements and are often transferrable into a related Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have received your Certificate or Degree, the training does not end there. The amount and type of continuing education you will need to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states require both a certain number of hours of continuing education as well as specific education in subjects, such as HIPPA compliance or ethics.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Each State has different regulations for massage therapists, so do not assume that you will automatically be qualified for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you meet the requirements to practice legally there.
