What is Therapeutic Massage?

Keystone Florida medical massage therapist treating woman patientAs previously discussed, massage therapy is an alternative form of healthcare that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manipulates skin, muscles and tissue to diminish stress and eliminate tension and pain in their patients.  Classic, or Swedish Massage, is the kind of massage that most people relate to when discussing massage therapy, and most Keystone FL massage therapy schools offer it as their principal form of massage.  But keep in mind, there are many other types of massage that schools may or may not include within their syllabus.  Following are some of the more popular examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Professionals that work in massage therapy should be referred to as massage therapists. On occasion one may hear them called a masseuse or a masseur, which is generally the name of a female or a male massage practitioner. However, these titles generally carry a negative connotation among the general public and Keystone FL professionals alike and are better avoided.

Massage Therapist Training Requirements

Programs can range in length from several months for a Diploma or a Certificate to as long as two years for an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also be State specific based on the number of hours required for licensing.  An additional factor that can also influence the program length is whether classes are offered during the daytime or at night.  In addition, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy may have general studies requirements and are often transferrable into a similar Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have earned your Certificate or Degree, the training doesn’t stop there. The amount and type of continuing education you are required to complete will depend on the State where you are licensed.  Some states have requirements for both number of hours and subjects covered, such as ethics or HIPAA compliance.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Each State regulates massage therapy differently, so do not assume that you will automatically be qualified for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you have satisfied the requirements to legally practice there.
