What is Therapeutic Massage?

Sun City Center Florida medical massage therapist massaging female patientAs mentioned in the introduction, therapeutic massage is a holistic form of healthcare that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manipulates skin, muscles and tissue to diminish stress and eliminate tension and pain in their clients.  Classic, or Swedish Massage, is the kind of massage that most of us relate to when researching massage therapy, and the majority of Sun City Center FL massage therapy schools teach it as their principal form of massage.  But keep in mind, there are numerous other forms of massage that programs have the option to include within their course of instruction.  Below are just a few examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Professionals that work in massage therapy are properly referred to as massage therapists. On occasion you might hear them called a masseur or a masseuse, which refers to a female or a male massage practitioner. However, these names often carry a negative connotation among the general public and Sun City Center FL professionals alike and should be avoided.

Massage Therapy Training Requirements

Programs can vary in length from a few months for a Diploma or a Certificate to as long as 2 years to earn an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also vary by State dependent on the training hours required for licensing.  An additional factor that may also influence the program length is whether classes are offered during the day or in the evening.  Also, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy may have general education requirements and are often transferrable into a similar Bachelor’s Degree Program.  After you have received your Degree, Diploma or Certificate, the education doesn’t stop there. The type and amount of continuing education you are required to complete will depend on the State where you are licensed.  Some states require both a certain number of hours of continuing education as well as specific education in subjects, such as HIPPA compliance or ethics.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Each State has different regulations for massage therapists, so it is not safe to assume that you will automatically qualify for licensing. Confirm with your new State prior to moving that you meet the requirements to legally practice there.
