What is Therapeutic Massage?

South Elgin Illinois clinical massage therapist treating female patientAs mentioned in the introduction, massage therapy is a holistic form of healthcare that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manually stimulates skin, muscles and tissue to reduce stress and alleviate pain and tension in their clients.  Swedish, or Classic Massage, is the type of massage that most people relate to when discussing therapeutic massage, and most South Elgin IL massage therapy schools teach it as their primary form of massage.  But keep in mind, there are many other types of massage that schools may or may not include within their course of instruction.  Below are just a few examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Practitioners that work in massage therapy should be referred to as massage therapists. From time to time you might hear them called a masseur or a masseuse, which is generally the name of a male or female massage practitioner. However, these terms often have a derogatory connotation among South Elgin IL professionals and the public at large and are better avoided.

Massage Therapy Training Requirements

Programs can vary in length from a few months for a Certificate or a Diploma to as long as two years for an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also vary by State based on the number of hours required for licensing.  Another factor that may also influence the length of the program is whether classes are offered during the daytime or in the evening.  Also, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy often has general education requirements and are often transferrable into a similar Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have received your Certificate or Degree, the education does not end there. The amount and type of continuing education you will need to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states have requirements for both number of hours and subjects covered, such as ethics or HIPAA compliance.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Every State has different regulations for massage therapists, so it is not safe to assume that you will automatically qualify for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you meet the requirements to legally practice there.
