What is a Massage Therapist?

Suitland Maryland massage therapist treating female patientAs previously discussed, massage therapy is an alternative form of healthcare that provides relief from pain and helps people function better. The massage therapist manipulates muscles, tissue and skin to diminish stress and relieve pain and tension in their clients.  Swedish, or Classic Massage, is the type of massage that most people relate to when discussing massage therapy, and almost all Suitland MD massage therapy schools offer it as their principal form of massage.  However, there are numerous other forms of massage that programs have the option to include within their course of instruction.  Following are some of the more popular examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Professionals that work in massage therapy are properly referred to as massage therapists. On occasion one may hear them called a masseuse or a masseur, which refers to a male or female massage practitioner. However, these terms typically carry a derogatory connotation among Suitland MD professionals and the public at large and should be avoided.

Massage Therapist Training Requirements

Programs can vary in length from several months for a Diploma or a Certificate to as long as 2 years for an Associate’s Degree.  The lengths of the programs will also be State specific dependent on the number of hours required for licensing.  An additional factor that can also have an effect on the length of the program is whether classes are offered during the daytime or at night.  Also, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy may have general education requirements and the credits may be transferrable into a similar Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have earned your Degree, Diploma or Certificate, the training does not end there. The type and amount of continuing education you will need to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states have requirements for both number of hours and subjects covered, such as HIPPA compliance or ethics.

Massage Therapist Licensing

Each State regulates massage therapy differently, so it is not safe to assume that you will automatically qualify for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you meet the requirements to legally practice there.
