What is Therapeutic Massage?

Andover Massachusetts medical massage therapist treating woman patientAs mentioned in the introduction, massage therapy is an alternative form of healthcare that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manually stimulates muscles, tissue and skin to reduce stress and eliminate tension and pain in their patients.  Swedish, or Classic Massage, is the kind of massage that many of us relate to when discussing therapeutic massage, and most Andover MA massage therapy schools offer it as their principal type of massage.  But keep in mind, there are numerous other forms of massage that programs may or may not include within their course of instruction.  Following are just a few examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Professionals that work in massage therapy are properly referred to as massage therapists. From time to time you might hear them called a masseuse or a masseur, which is generally the name of a male or female massage practitioner. However, these terms generally carry a derogatory connotation among Andover MA professionals and the public at large and should be avoided.

Massage Therapist Education Requirements

Programs can range in length from a few months for a Certificate or a Diploma to as long as two years for an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also vary by State based on the training hours required for licensing.  An additional factor that may also influence the length of the program is whether classes are offered during the day or in the evening.  Also, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy may have general education requirements and are often transferrable into a related Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have received your Degree, Diploma or Certificate, the training doesn’t stop there. The type and amount of continuing education you are required to complete will depend on the State where you are licensed.  Some states have requirements for both number of hours and subjects covered, such as ethics or HIPAA compliance.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Every State regulates massage therapy differently, so do not assume that you will automatically be qualified for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you meet the requirements to practice legally there.
