What is Massage Therapy?

Royal Oak Michigan clinical massage therapist massaging female patientAs mentioned in the introduction, therapeutic massage is a holistic form of healthcare that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manually stimulates muscles, tissue and skin to diminish stress and eliminate tension and pain in their clients.  Classic, or Swedish Massage, is the kind of massage that most of us think of when discussing therapeutic massage, and almost all Royal Oak MI massage therapy schools teach it as their primary type of massage.  However, there are numerous other types of massage that schools have the option to include as part of their syllabus.  Following are some of the more popular examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Practitioners that work in massage therapy are properly referred to as massage therapists. On occasion one may hear them called a masseuse or a masseur, which refers to a male or female massage practitioner. Unfortunately, these names typically carry a derogatory connotation among Royal Oak MI professionals and the public at large and are better avoided.

Massage Therapy Education Requirements

Programs can vary in length from several months for a Certificate or a Diploma to as long as 2 years for an Associate’s Degree.  The lengths of the programs will also be State specific based on the training hours required for licensing.  Another factor that can also influence the length of the program is whether classes are scheduled during the day or at night.  In addition, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy often has general studies requirements and are often transferrable into a similar Bachelor’s Degree Program.  After you have received your Degree, Diploma or Certificate, the training does not end there. The amount and type of continuing education you will need to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states require both a certain number of hours of continuing education as well as specific education in subjects, such as HIPPA compliance or ethics.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Every State regulates massage therapy differently, so it is not safe to assume that you will automatically qualify for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you meet the requirements to practice legally there.
