What is Therapeutic Massage?

North Bergen New Jersey medical massage therapist massaging woman patientAs mentioned in the introduction, therapeutic massage is a holistic form of medicine that provides relief from pain and helps people function better. The massage therapist manipulates muscles, tissue and skin to reduce stress and alleviate pain and tension in their patients.  Classic, or Swedish Massage, is the kind of massage that most of us relate to when discussing therapeutic massage, and most North Bergen NJ massage therapy schools offer it as their principal type of massage.  But keep in mind, there are many other types of massage that programs may or may not include within their course of instruction.  Below are just a few examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Practitioners that work in therapeutic massage are properly referred to as massage therapists. From time to time one may hear them called a masseuse or a masseur, which refers to a male or female massage professional. Unfortunately, these terms typically have a derogatory connotation among the general public and North Bergen NJ professionals alike and are better avoided.

Massage Therapy Education Requirements

Programs can vary in length from a few months for a Diploma or a Certificate to as long as two years for an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also be State specific based on the training hours required for licensing.  An additional factor that may also influence the program length is whether classes are scheduled during the day or at night.  Also, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy may have general education requirements and the credits may be transferrable into a similar Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have earned your Certificate or Degree, the education does not end there. The amount and type of continuing education you will need to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states require both a certain number of hours of continuing education as well as specific education in subjects, such as HIPPA compliance or ethics.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Every State has different regulations for massage therapists, so do not assume that you will automatically be qualified for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you meet the requirements to legally practice there.
