What is a Massage Therapist?

Long Island City New York massage therapist massaging female patientAs mentioned in the introduction, therapeutic massage is a holistic form of healing that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manually stimulates skin, muscles and tissue to reduce stress and eliminate pain and tension in their patients.  Swedish, or Classic Massage, is the type of massage that most of us think of when researching therapeutic massage, and most Long Island City NY massage therapy schools offer it as their primary form of massage.  However, there are many other forms of massage that schools may or may not include within their syllabus.  Below are some of the more popular examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Professionals that work in massage therapy should be referred to as massage therapists. From time to time you might hear them called a masseur or a masseuse, which refers to a female or a male massage practitioner. However, these names typically have a derogatory connotation among the general public and Long Island City NY professionals alike and are better avoided.

Massage Therapy Training Requirements

Programs can range in length from a few months for a Diploma or a Certificate to as long as two years for an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also be State specific based on the number of hours required for licensing.  An additional factor that may also have an effect on the program length is whether classes are scheduled during the day or at night.  Also, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy often has general studies requirements and are often transferrable into a similar Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have received your Degree, Diploma or Certificate, the training does not end there. The amount and type of continuing education you will need to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states have requirements for both number of hours and subjects covered, such as HIPPA compliance or ethics.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Each State regulates massage therapy differently, so do not assume that you will automatically be qualified for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you meet the requirements to legally practice there.
