What is a Massage Therapist?

Merrick New York clinical massage therapist treating woman patientAs previously discussed, massage therapy is an alternative form of medicine that provides relief from pain and helps people function better. The massage therapist manipulates skin, muscles and tissue to reduce stress and alleviate tension and pain in their clients.  Swedish, or Classic Massage, is the type of massage that many of us think of when discussing massage therapy, and almost all Merrick NY massage therapy schools offer it as their principal type of massage.  But keep in mind, there are numerous other types of massage that programs have the option to include as part of their course of instruction.  Below are just a few examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Professionals that work in massage therapy are properly referred to as massage therapists. From time to time one may hear them called a masseuse or a masseur, which is generally the name of a male or female massage practitioner. However, these titles generally carry a negative connotation among the general public and Merrick NY professionals alike and should be avoided.

Massage Therapy Training Requirements

Programs can range in length from a few months for a Certificate or a Diploma to as long as 2 years for an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also be State specific dependent on the training hours required for licensing.  An additional factor that can also influence the program length is whether classes are scheduled during the daytime or in the evening.  In addition, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy often has general education requirements and are often transferrable into a similar Bachelor’s Degree Program.  After you have earned your Degree, Diploma or Certificate, the training doesn’t stop there. The amount and type of continuing education you are required to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states require both a certain number of hours of continuing education as well as specific education in subjects, such as HIPPA compliance or ethics.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Every State regulates massage therapy differently, so it is not safe to assume that you will automatically qualify for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you have satisfied the requirements to practice legally there.
