What is a Massage Therapist?

Fredericksburg Virginia medical massage therapist massaging female patientAs mentioned in the introduction, therapeutic massage is an alternative form of healing that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manually stimulates skin, muscles and tissue to diminish stress and relieve pain and tension in their patients.  Classic, or Swedish Massage, is the type of massage that many of us relate to when discussing massage therapy, and almost all Fredericksburg VA massage therapy schools teach it as their principal type of massage.  But keep in mind, there are many other types of massage that programs may or may not include within their syllabus.  Below are some of the more popular examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Practitioners that work in massage therapy should be referred to as massage therapists. From time to time one may hear them called a masseur or a masseuse, which refers to a female or a male massage practitioner. Unfortunately, these titles typically carry a derogatory connotation among Fredericksburg VA professionals and the public at large and should be avoided.

Massage Therapist Training Requirements

Programs can vary in length from a few months for a Diploma or a Certificate to as long as two years to earn an Associate’s Degree.  How long the programs are will also be State specific based on the training hours required for licensing.  Another factor that may also have an effect on the length of the program is whether classes are offered during the daytime or in the evening.  Also, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy often has general education requirements and are often transferrable into a related Bachelor’s Degree Program.  Once you have received your Certificate or Degree, the training does not end there. The type and amount of continuing education you are required to complete will vary based on the State where you are licensed.  Some states require both a certain number of hours of continuing education as well as specific education in subjects, such as ethics or HIPAA compliance.

Massage Therapy Licensing

Every State regulates massage therapy differently, so do not assume that you will automatically be qualified for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you meet the requirements to legally practice there.
