What is Therapeutic Massage?

Walla Walla Washington clinical massage therapist massaging female patientAs mentioned in the introduction, therapeutic massage is an alternative form of medicine that helps people feel and function better. The massage therapist manipulates skin, muscles and tissue to reduce stress and alleviate tension and pain in their patients.  Classic, or Swedish Massage, is the type of massage that most people relate to when discussing massage therapy, and most Walla Walla WA massage therapy schools teach it as their principal form of massage.  However, there are many other forms of massage that schools may or may not include within their syllabus.  Below are just a few examples.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Shiatsu Massage
  • Thai Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Pregnancy Massage

Professionals that work in massage therapy are properly referred to as massage therapists. On occasion one may hear them called a masseuse or a masseur, which refers to a female or a male massage practitioner. However, these terms typically have a derogatory connotation among Walla Walla WA professionals and the public at large and are better avoided.

Massage Therapist Training Requirements

Programs can range in length from several months for a Diploma or a Certificate to as long as two years to earn an Associate’s Degree.  The lengths of the programs will also vary by State dependent on the training hours required for licensing.  Another factor that can also have an effect on the length of the program is whether classes are scheduled during the daytime or at night.  In addition, an Associate Degree in Massage Therapy may have general education requirements and the credits may be transferrable into a related Bachelor’s Degree Program.  After you have received your Certificate or Degree, the education does not end there. The type and amount of continuing education you are required to complete will depend on the State where you are licensed.  Some states have requirements for both number of hours and subjects covered, such as HIPPA compliance or ethics.

Massage Therapist Licensing

Every State regulates massage therapy differently, so do not assume that you will automatically be qualified for licensing. Check with your new State before moving to confirm that you meet the requirements to legally practice there.
